Going without is good for you
We’ve just started the season of Lent. Lent is enjoying something of a renaissance in our culture. The idea of a season of giving something up is appealing. Intentionally going without something is a good way to break a sense of dependency. That might mean a ‘digital fast’ – putting your phone away for a time (maybe even a whole day?) or coming off social media, the better to avoid its constant distractions.
When you fast, you are engaging in a spiritual practice which is common to all major religions and goes back thousands of years. Jesus told his followers to accompany prayer with fasting; I’m better at the former than the latter! Going without, or trying something new, is a great way to focus on your spiritual life this Lent.
