For some people, the church can be a bit like a Tardis: it’s much bigger on the inside than it appears to be from the outside. We know our particular church building, squeezed between York Road and Mount Hermon Road in Woking, is a bit like that. It’s almost invisible from the road but, for those who step inside, there is a whole community which comes together, worships together, supports each other and serves our wider community.
In this series for Advent we want to open some windows so everyone can see a bit more of who we are and what goes on in a church like ours.
For the last 20 years I have been a member of SMOB. I started to come due to its link with Woking Mencap and was impressed by the very warm welcome I was given on my first visit. Church on a Sunday has become an important part of my life and a place where I see a lot of friendly people who always have time to talk to me, especially about football. I feel included because I am now able to help with welcoming others to church and also with communion from time to time.
I love the singing and always sit near to where the band is playing. In December we have the Mencap Christmas Carol concert, which is well attended by people from all over Woking. We have great fun singing well known carols and putting actions to part of the Christmas story. This is followed by tea in the church hall which is provided by many volunteers and I love showing others of my friends what a great place SMOB is.
The Woking Mencap Society Christmas Carol Service takes place at St Mary of Bethany Church, affectionately referred to as ‘SMOB’, on Sunday 9th December, 2018 at 3pm. The Carol service will be followed by tea in the church for all the family until 4.45pm.
